Rectal Bleeding

Bleeding from the bottom is a fairly common symptom and is caused by a number of things. It can be frightening to see blood either mixed in with the poo, separate from the poo or on the toilet paper after wiping. The commonest causes of this are haemorrhoids (piles), anal fissure (a tear in the lining of the bottom), an anal fistula or inflammatory bowel disease but it could also mean something like a polyp or a cancer in the colon or rectum. If this is noticed then it does need to be checked out for early diagnosis and treatment.

Changes in bowel habit

All people have a slightly different bowel habit and there is a large range of what is considered normal. Some people go to open their bowels once or a few times every day and others may only go once every few days. Changes may occur depending on what we eat and drink but a persistent change can mean an underlying bowel problem. This may mean an infection or inflammation in the gut but is also a sign of bowel cancer so seeing a specialist is important to find out of the cause is something more serious and needs treatment.

Abdominal Pain

Abdominal (tummy) pain is actually pretty common and most of us may get pain in our tummy area from time to time. This pain may be sharp, squeezing, dull or vague and may be persistent or come and go. It can also start in one position and move around. It could indicate a problem inside the tummy and various treatments are available depending on the cause. There are some very common, self-limiting causes but some pains indicate a more serious problem that does need investigation and treatment.

Sickness And Vomiting

Some people have a sense of feeling sick (nausea) or actually vomit. These symptoms can occur separately or together and may indicate a problem which needs assessing and treating. There are various causes of these symptoms including a tummy bug (gastroenteritis), peptic ulcer disease, reflux oesophagitis or indicative of a blockage in the bowel. There is a very long list of causes of this and can also be caused by eating something that doesn’t agree with us, anxiety, an ear problem and a range of other things.
